You can learn about some major changes in payments and eligibility in effect now that recipients need to know.

Payment Due dates for May 2025

It will be business as usual for most of Centrelink’s May 2025 payments will be paid according to the regular fortnightly schedule.

But with some territories celebrating the Labour Day public holiday just ahead on May 5th, benefits that would be processed on that day will be made on Friday, May 2nd instead.

The key May 2025 payments are:

Recipients are advised to refer to their own payment schedule by signing into their myGov account, which details all payment dates including pensions and allowances, or via the Centrelink app.

Recent Adjustments in Rates of Payment

There have been a few big changes to Centrelink payment rates here they are as of May 2025. Patient pay rises: * May reflect inflation pressures and economic circumstances.

The Age Pension has risen 3.2% year-on-year, taking the new maximum fortnightly amounts to $1,238.50 for singles and $1,868.60 for couples. The increase is in line with the regular indexation, which takes place by two instalments each year.

Recipients of the JobSeeker Payment will receive a 2.8% increase, raising the base rate for single with no children to $768.40 per fortnight.

Those with dependent children and people aged over 60 who have been receiving the payment for nine consecutive months will receive $827.60 a fortnight.

Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment rates have also been raised by 3.2%, the same amount as the boost to the Age Pension. The Family Tax Benefit has been boosted by a piddling 2.5%.

New Support Measures

The government has announced a number of new forms of support which will be available from May 2025 to cater for continued economic pressures.

Payments for up to about 4 million Australians on concession cards will be automatically boosted by a temporary Energy Relief Supplement of $150.
This one-off payment is intended to help with higher energy costs and will be automatically paid to recipients as part of their regular May payment.

There is also a new $300 per quarter Skills Development Allowance for JobSeeker recipients undertaking an approved training course. The goal of the initiative is to help jobseekers gain new skills to suit themselves to new job opportunities.

Digital Payment System Changes

Services Australia has digital payment systems in place to support the May 2025 payment cycle. This update is intended to streamline payment processing and increase security.

A key enhancement is that approval work times have decreased significantly for urgent payment requests, to 24-48 hours from 3-5 working days previously. This is especially worthwhile for those with financial hardship needs who may need help quickly.

The identity verification process has also been boosted to prevent fraudulent claims. Recipients may have seen more security checks applying when they visited their account, specifically changing payment details.

The Centrelink app gets a major update which makes it easier to navigate and track your payments in real time. We encourage recipients to check their version and upgrade to take advantage of these improvements.

Eligibility Review Prompt Notices

The annual Centrelink assessment process will start from May 2025 for many recipients. Those chosen for the review will be informed through their myGov inbox or by post.

Recipients must act quickly, however, to respond to these reviews to avoid any interruption in their payments. This year’s review process has been made simpler, with many recipients given the option to do the entire review online through their myGov account.

Typical documentation required includes verification of income, rental contracts, and valuations for your assets. Serivces Australia suggest to have these documents on hand to help speed up the reassessment.

For those who need help to review, more staff will also be on hand at Centrelink service centres during May and June 2025. Appointments can be made via the Centrelink app or telephone.

Assistance for Regional Communities

Special arrangements apply for May 2025 due to natural disasters in a number of local areas. Claimants in disaster affected areas may also be able to receive advance payments and ongoing suspensions of mutual obligations.

Officers from the Community Recovery Service are on the ground in affected areas. These officers are able to help with immediate payment questions and advice for disaster recovery payments.

Charlestown and remote community residents to have a Mobile Service Center in their areas for longer during May 2025. Mobile units deliver Centrelink services to communities located far from permanent service centers.

Culturally-appropriate help will still be available for Indigenous Australians in remote communities with the Remote Servicing Team reaching more communities than ever.

Mutual Obligation Changes

This is what JobSeeker recipients need to know about the mutual obligation changes that come into force from May 2025. The minimum number of monthly job applications has been changed for those regions with different labor-market conditions, and some areas now have lower requirements.

Further enhancements have been made to the Points-Based Activiation System with new activities introduced to acknowledge caring for family members and volunteering in the community as worthwhile activities. These events now score more points than they used to.

Digital job search seminars will take place at various times in May, 2025 which will help you to learn how to use artificial intelligence in job applications, how algorithms can affect your applications and how to prepare for a digital interview. It is also work and participation in that workshop counts towards mutual obligations.

They can now fully meet their mutual obligations quotas by volunteering 15 hours a week, up from 10 hours.

Moving forward: Payments for June

We remind recipients that the June 2025 payment run will be the annual end-of-financial year payment supplements for those payment types that are eligible. These supplements are generally processed in the June end payment.

The Age Pension Work Bonus will be reset on 1 July 2025 so that Age Pensioners can earn up to the threshold after which their pension payment is reduced before the new financial year comes around.

Family Tax Benefit customers will also get their end of year reconciliation in late June which steps people out of accrued debt or may let them pay more in the event of their annual income assessment.

Rent Assistance amounts will be reviewed in June 2025, and changes will be effective from the first payment period of July 2025 onwards.

Services Australia has broadened financial counselling services ahead of a surge in demand expected in May and June 2025. Financial counselling services These services offer free and confidential advice to assist you manage your money.

FIS officers provide free, confidential and independent information on investment choices, dealing with debt and planning for retirement. Appointments can be booked through myGov or by phone.

Crisis Payment is still available to people who are in severe financial hardship, and is being topped up to provide more generous emergency relief.

New financial literacy seminars beginning on 1 May 2025 at Centrelink outlets will focus on budgeting, saving and financial product awareness.
